About Worland, WY

Located 25 miles west of the Big Horns, Worland is a modern western community which offers the “good life” to residents. Historically, Worland was founded in 1906 on the west side of the Big Horn River. However, as the railroad moved into the area, tracks were laid to the east of the river. The town’s founders, eager to benefit from the railroad, agreed a move was necessary. During the winter, town residents slid their homes, businesses and belongings across the frozen Big Horn River and relocated at the town’s present site.

The business diversity in Worland continues to out-rank even some larger cities in the state. Ranked the 13th largest city by population, Worland is rich in business climate. Home to many nationally recognized businesses such as the Wyoming Sugar Company, Crown Cork & Seal, Pepsi-Cola, and MillerCoors. Other large employers in town include R.T. Communication, Devon Energy, Williston Basin Interstate, and the Washakie Medical Center, just to name a few. Worland boasts a stable and growing business structure which residents are very proud of. A local economic development center can answer questions about the area and state. Contact the Washakie Development Director at 307-347-8900, email

The retail businesses provide a mecca of shopping opportunity. Outdoor enthusiasts can choose from golfing our highly-rated 18-hole course, searching a geological site for prehistoric plant fossils, hiking a number of trails, or using off-road or all-terrain vehicles in the surrounding badlands. Hunters and fishermen enjoy the area because of the abundant wildlife and fishing opportunities.
